Display
Usually, companies that also make TVs have very good display quality in their phones. Samsung is an example. The same is also true when it comes to Sony.
The phone (Sony Xperia XA1), features an IPS display of 5.0 inches with a resolution of 720 x 1280. Some, may consider this a disadvantage; however, 5.0 inch displays at that resolution will serve you just right.
In fact, many people can’t even tell the difference between an identical phone of a higher resolution.
Corning Gorilla Glass, is used to protect the display. This glass, helps protect the display from scratches and falls.
Screen wise, the phone does not really stand out from other similarly priced phones in Kenya.
Camera Quality
Let’s start off with this fact, Sony cameras are used in iPhones, so you already know where we are going.
During the years before smartphone cameras picked up and gained quality, Sony was a dominant player (it still is) in digital cameras.
So the quality has passed down to the smartphones.
Sony Xperia XA1 comes with a 23MP camera, which to tell the truth, is better than almost all smartphones in the market right now. Even during the unveiling, the quality of the lens was the main focus and highlight.
It also has phase detection, panorama and laser autofocus. The LED flash, ensures that photos taken in low light conditions don’t appear washed and grainy.
Coming to the selfie camera (secondary camera), it is equipped with an 8MP lens which also has auto-focus.
Performance
It is really good, to see that many phone manufacturers have moved away from 2GB RAM and are now offering 3GB. Sony is such a company.
With 3GB, which Sony Xperia XA1 has, you can run multiple apps at the same time without worrying too much about the smartphone having performance issue.
Also, the Octa core Mediatek Helio P20 handles demanding applications smoothly. Some people did question this choice. They would have preferred the phone to come with a Snapdragon processor.
However, what you should know is that the Mediatek has really upped their game. We are now seeing the chips perform amazingly well.
Furthermore, the Android 7.0 Nougat that the phone ships with has some major improvements. Among them is user interface tweaks, performance upgrades, battery life extension and security updates.
Design
I really like the design of the Sony Xperia XA1. The screen is almost bezel less. Sony, have yet again decide to go with their signature “boxy phone”. It features sharp edges with the camera at the back off center.
However, is does not have a finger print scanner. This is a huge disadvantage since you will have to manually enter your pin every time you want to unlock the device.
Battery
At 2300mAh, the battery is of a very small capacity. Nowadays, most companies can get away with providing batteries that have lower rated capacity.
Chief reason; the ability of fast charge has ensured that the devices can be plugged in and in a few minutes go from 0-50% capacity.
